The electric Geophysical Year(eGY) which will lead the development of geophysics in the future has started up in Beijing recently, China will not only be a big nation but also a powerful nation in earth science after this period. It was claimed by CHEN Rong, the vice chair of eGY Chinese committee, at the Chinese Geophysical Society's 60 anniversary celebration & ZHAO Jiuzhang centenary celebration & IGY+50、eGY meeting.

The Geophysics, which studies the earth and sun-earth space, is an earth science integrating theory & application. The main task of geophysics is studying the form, evolution, structure and element of the earth's Interior and the outer space by the physics methods. The Chinese Geophysical Society, which was founded in Aug. 1947 in Shanghai, is a member society of the China Association for Science and Technology. Having 13877 members at present, it is one of the 32 national academic societies which were founded before the birth of People's Republic of China.

Through the persistent efforts of Chinese geophysicians for 60 years, China has achieved international leading positions in many areas such as the exploration and theoretical studying of outer space environment, earthquake forecasting and seismology, the lithospheric structure and the continental geodynamics, geomagnetic and upper atmospheric physics, space geodesic techniques and astrogeodynamics, geophysical exploration of oil-gas fields and coal fields. According to the theory about the second exploitation of the oil and gas resources, which was proposed by CAS academician Liu Guangding, Chinese geophysicians has found large oil and gas fields in Sichuan and Yunnan. Those achievements in geophysics have earned an international reputation for China.
